World Progress Report with Joan Lunden Explores Osteoporosis

World Progress Report takes a closer look at osteoporosis.

BOCA RATON, FL, June 26, 2010 /Television PR News/ -- It's known as the "silent disease" and it's affecting the lives of many women and men across the globe. Most are unaware that they are suffering from this preventable disorder until they experience its excruciating pain. Osteoporosis is a debilitating ailment that strips both calcium and protein from bone tissue causing bones to become weak, brittle and easily breakable.

Osteoporosis is prominently discovered among postmenopausal women. Because osteoporosis causes bones to become so frail, a person can trigger a fracture or break simply by coughing or sneezing. The most common areas of injury occur in either the hip or spinal areas. If diagnosed, osteoporosis can also cause a loss of height resulting in a permanent stooped position. Uncontrollable risk factors include family history, age, Caucasian or Asian ethnicity and having a small or thin body size. Other risk factors consist of excessive alcohol intake, smoking, low calcium and Vitamin D intake, and low estrogen or testosterone levels. Though there is no cure, treatment and prevention methods are available.

By making sure you're receiving the right amount of calcium, Vitamin D and exercise, one can improve their chances of prevention. However, for those that have already been diagnosed with the disease, various therapeutic medications such as biophosphonates can help relieve pain and strengthen weakened bones. Ultimately, education is key when learning how to cope with any diagnosis. As such, the Public Television series, World Progress Report, hopes to raise awareness about osteoporosis by educating those who suffer from this disease about available treatment and prevention methods.

"Osteoporosis is not something to take lightly. However, not everyone is aware of its severity. That's why we hope our series can help inform the public about the various resources available helping people lead healthier lives," said the Executive Producer of the series.
